In honor of March Madness, which gets into full swing today, today’s Iconic Literary Man is the one and only Robert Penn Warren, founder of The Southern Review and graduate of the Literary Man’s beloved alma mater Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt will square off against the Vanderbilt of the North (Harvard), at 4:40 pm EST today, and thousands upon thousands of Vanderbilt alumni will congregate at the Blind Pig on East 14th Street in order to celebrate the merciless destruction of Harvard at the hands of our beloved Commodores.

So here’s to you, Robert Penn Warren, your American masterpiece ALL THE KING’S MEN is one of the reasons we all wanted to become writers.

Robert Penn Warren. b 1905. d. 1989.

“How life is strange and changeful, and the crystal is in the steel at the point of fracture, and the toad bears a jewel in its forehead, and the meaning of moments passes like the breeze that scarcely ruffles the leaf of the willow.” –All the King’s Men

Go Vanderbilt!
