In 1964, Ken Kesey typed and mailed a letter in response to the critics who hated the stage adaption of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST (images courtesy of Wisconsin Center for Film & Theatre Research). What’s so amazing is how patient he sounds and how empathetic he is towards the patients he interacted with while doing research for the novel. In response to critics who felt that the stage version of the mental hospital was unrealistic, he says: “to those who think it is fictionally exaggerated, I can only say: try it first and see.” That is so bad ass.
