Literarians, there’s a new park being dedicated in Queens, and the City of New York has asked for your submissions to name the new park. This is your one opportunity to name something Yossarian Yards or Gatsby Greens or something else uselessly alliterative. There is no limit to the number of submissions you can enter, it’s free, only takes 10 seconds, and the winner gets to meet Mayor Bloomberg in person. Are there any great writers from Queens worthy of having this park named after them?

Here are the details:

Help us name this new, sustainably-designed 1.5 acre open space at the eastern end of Queens Plaza in Long Island City, which currently has no name. The former John F. Kennedy commuter parking lot has been transformed into a green space that features wetlands, native plantings, artist-designed benches and paving.

The new name for the green space will be unveiled on a permanent sign during an official ribbon-cutting event. In addition, Mayor Bloomberg will meet the contestant who submits the winning name.

Today Queens Plaza, Tomorrow Something Weird and Cool

In the name of literature, get thee to the web site and submit some kind of awesome literary name for the park. Victor LaValle, Sam Lipsyte, we’re looking at you, as resident Queens scholars to come up with something good.

Submit here. You have until 10/26/11 to come up with something good!

We think something in honor of THE GREAT GATSBY would be cool, as the novel’s climactic scene takes place in Queens.
